Lot 488:
3 5/8" Attractive Modern 3/4 Grooved Fluted Axe
3 5/8" Attractive Modern 3/4 Grooved Fluted Axe. The artist who made this piece put some serious time in to it. It is made of a very hard black granite. The end effect was achieved by hitting it with shot beads with a sand blaster followed by a polishing of the ridges. For those who aren’t familiar with modern hard stone manufacture even with the use of modern tools a piece like this most likely took 2 to 6 hours to make. I watched TJ Onken make many of them. His were larger but would take him half a day to make one and he had been doing it for decades. This fluted axe was most likely made by one of the many makers in West Central Illinois.
