Large African Makonde Family Tree of Life Ebony Hand Made
Vintage Large African Makonde Family Tree of Life Ebony Hand Made. Very large example with extreme detail in artistry. The "Family Tree of Life" is one of the most iconic types of Makonde Sculpture, originated in the 1950’s with the Makonde tribe. In general the tree displays how a typical African village survives by working with nature and by each man supporting one another. This ebony wood sculpture represents people undertaking diverse activities in togetherness depicted by the detailed carving of numerous intertwined figures of men and women with various tools and items. Wood cracks over time and this piece has some splits. One of the figurines has been nicely glued back in place and there are a couple of small pieces missing in the sculpture as shown in photos. Displays great despite its blemishes from time and handling. With a little restoration work this is a museum quality piece. Measures 25" Tall. Weighs approximately 7.5 pounds.
