Could be a Cajun, Statue portraying a free black man from the civil war era or could be meant to portray a poor African. His cloths are depicted as torn, his hat tattered and his stature bent from years of hard labor. Smoking a pipe in his later years of life reflecting on his past and future. Like all art its usually open to interpretation. This piece isn’t signed anywhere that we could find so it is difficult to pin point its origin. The material appears to be a form of marble. Where it was polished dark black spots are shown off. The artist did an outstanding job incorporating changes in the stone with application to the finished statue. The man hours involved on a piece like this even with modern tools would be quite long. The only fault I can see on this piece that wouldn’t be attributed to the stone used is his nose appears to have a chip out of it. Easily fixed via restoration or by someone skilled with small dremels. This statue measures 12 1/2" by 6 1/2"
