2 3/16" Rare Geode Grand Arrowhead found in Van Buren County, IA by Dale and Betty Roberts COA Keele
2 3/16" Rare Geode Grand Arrowhead found in Van Buren County, IA by Dale and Betty Roberts on Sept. 6, 1980. This piece is made from the outer cortex of a geode. Stunning semi-transluscent material. Ryan Keele COA. He was excited to get to paper this piece. I think it was the first time someone brought him one made of Geode. Generally Geode arrowheads are white but can be a variety of colors. Orange is the most common and easiest to identify as Geode. When you get near the geode sources there are geodes cracked all over the fields where they poped them apart generally by fire to get at the often thin cortex which is chalchedony. Going toward the center the material changes from chalchedony to a sugar quartz/chalchedony mix and then in to a harder quartz. This piece is mostly chalchedony from a geode. This knowledge is almost unknown and something I learned in my years of knapping having grown up near giant geode sources. Most Geodes are not usable but there are rarely other usable materials close to these sources and the indians made do. I shared this knowleddge with Mr Keele several years ago when I discovered it. The points made from geodes are usually under 3 inches and are often on the crude side. This is one of the better ones I have held. I have a couple better I have found but not as colorful. When it comes to points and talking about our rocks this is the kind of piece that gets me excited. There are lots of Hardins, Dovetails etc etc. But a geode point? Now you got a rare piece.
