METZ 1918 WW1 37MM Trench Art Shell Casing. This shell commemorates the city of METZ. Following the armistice with Germany ending the First World War, the French army entered Metz in November 1918 and Philippe Petain received his marshal’s baton from French President Raymond Poincare and Prime Minister Georges Clemenceau on the Esplanade garden. The city returned to France under the Treaty of Versailles in 1919. The French had lost the city to German control in 1871. The base of this shell reads 37-85 PDPs 334 1 17 (1917 date for shell casing). It measures 3 7/8" Tall.
