5-25 Million Year Old Sinomastodon Tooth found in Gansu Province, China (Late Miocene)
5-25 Million Year Old Sinomastodon Tooth found in Gansu Province, China. An early ancestor to the Mastodon the Sinomastodon has teeth that are similar to those of the late Pleistocene with noticeable differences. Sinomastodon is from the genus of gomphotheres, which were a group of proboscideans (relatives of modern elephants) with circular upper tusks. This specimen is petrified (as stone). A nice example of the type in good condition for its age. Older specimens of elephant and Mastodons like this are quite rare in comparison to the ones we see coming from the late Pleistocene. This tooth measures 9 1/4" by 4 1/2" by 3"
