10" Calamite Fossil Cluster on a Limestone Matrix found in Illinois
Calamites fossils are remnants of an extinct genus of tree-like plants that thrived during the Carboniferous and Permian periods, approximately 360 to 250 million years ago. These plants were closely related to modern horsetails but were much larger, growing up to 20 meters (about 66 feet) tall. Their fossils are often found as casts of their hollow stems, which had a bamboo-like appearance with segmented nodes and vertical ribbing. These plants were a significant part of ancient coal swamps, and their remains contributed to the formation of coal deposits we use today. This specimen measures 10" by 7 1/4" by 1 1/2" approximately.
