19th Century Framed Japanese Page about Emperor Tenmu the 40th Emperor of Japan. Professionally Framed. Emperor Tenmu (????), who reigned from 673 to 686 AD, was the 40th Emperor of Japan and a pivotal figure in Japanese history. He ascended to the throne after the Jinshin War, a conflict in which he defeated his nephew, Emperor Kobun. His reign marked significant political and cultural changes during the Asuka period.Tenmu centralized imperial power, implemented military reforms, and strengthened ties with religious institutions like the Ise Shrine. He also commissioned the creation of historical records, which eventually led to the compilation of the Kojiki, one of Japan’s oldest chronicles. His foreign policy favored the Korean kingdom of Silla while distancing Japan from China’s Tang dynasty. He was succeeded by his wife, Empress Jito, who continued many of his policies. Tenmu’s legacy includes his efforts to consolidate the imperial authority and his influence on Japan’s early historical narratives. Frame measures 12 3/4" by 9 3/4"
