Lot 423:
18th or 19th Century Dan Grebo Tribe Mask from Liberia, Africa
Dan Grebo tribe of Liberia, Africa. These masks often misattributed to the Dan or Kran Tribes are now recognized for their distinct artistic tradition. Their function was for use in ceremonies and to represent forest spirits. The wood has heavy use wear polish, is missing the hair piece as well as the metal which this type of mask typically has around the eyes. Inner edges are wore smooth where the wood originally had holes, broke off and new holes were created giving the edge an unevenness and thus showing off its use wear. From the Jean-Pierre Hallet Collection. Has a tag that goes along with it from when it was purchased at African Art on Auction. It measures 8 1/8" by 4 7/8" by 2 1/8" approximately. Tassels that dangle down are around 20 inches in length.
