Outstanding Porphyry Birdstone made by Bill Howland circa 1970’s. A stone artisan with around 40 years of making stone tools and various other trinkets Bill was fascinated with Native American Stone Art. This is a nice example of his work from that era. A distinguishing attribute that can be noticed on his popeye birdstones can be found on the eyes. The eyes on Bills birds sit above the plain of the bill (more so toward the top of the head) than the ones made by his close friend and teacher Billy Guthrie. Billy Guthries birdstones will have eyes level with the top of the head. This is a very highly polished and detailed piece made from a very good piece of porphyry granite.
