Ere Ibeji Yoruba 5 3/4" Sculpture Form Nigeria.
These figures are traditionally carved to represent twins, who are considered special in Yoruba culture. If one or both twins die, the family may commission a figure to house the soul of the deceased child. The figures are cared for as if they were living children often washed , dressed, and fed. The elongated head and elaborate hairstyle represent Yoruba idols of beauty.
