3 Steel Engraved Plates of Early Nautical Equipment – Early to Mid 1800’s. Single side pages that read No. 26, 27 and 28. It is unclear to us if these were part of a book or perhaps a catalog used by a salesman specializing in navigational equipment. They feature a Thirty Inch Theodolite, Twelve Inch Repeating Circle and Helitrope and a Portable Transit. The heliotrope, invented by Carl Friedrich Gauss in 1821, is an optical surveying instrument that reflects sunlight over long distances using a mirror, improving the accuracy of triangulation. The 30-inch theodolite, also known as the "Great Theodolite", was built around 1836 by Troughton and Simms of England. It was used extensively for surveying until 1873, when it was unfortunately damaged by a tornado. These pages although tattered on the edges would still frame nicely showing off early navigation equipment illustrated through steel engraving. Pages are 11" by 8 5/8" approximately. From the late Larry Innis Collection.
