Pecopteris Fern Fossil found in Will County, Illinois. Discoveries in Will County are typically linked to the famous Mazon Creek fossil beds in Illinois. Carboniferous (Pennsylvanian) – 300 million years ago. Both sides of the same fern fossil in a shale stone matrix. Measures approx. 4". Ex Field Museum of Natural History in Chicago. "HA" stands for the Hoard Anderson collection, one of the largest private collections of Mazon Creek fossils that was donated to the museum. Hoard donated his collection in 1978. At some point since then the Museum deaccessioned much of his collection to raise money for museum projects.
