Original 1493 Leaf from the Nuremberg Chronicle (Liber Chronicarum). Folio CCXXVIII (228) of the Latin Version printed in 1493. Authentic leaf from the famed Nuremberg Chronicle (Liber Chronicarum), printed in 1493 by Anton Koberger, one of the most important printers of the incunabula era. This monumental work was compiled by Hartmann Schedel with illustrations by Michael Wolgemut and Wilhelm Pleydenwurff. It stands as one of the greatest achievements of 15th?century bookmaking. The Nuremberg Chronicle is celebrated as one of the most extensively illustrated books of the 15th century, produced just decades after Gutenberg’s press transformed Europe. Its sweeping narrative of world history, paired with more than 1,800 woodcuts, makes every surviving leaf a tangible link to the dawn of print culture. Folio CCXXVIII belongs to the section on the Popes, near the end of the Chronicle’s long sequence of papal biographies. The Chronicle arranges world history into "ages, " and the papal catalog appears in the Sixth Age. Professionally framed. Leafs from the Nuremberg Chronicle are printed front and back as this one is. With its nice framework we did not remove it to get a look at the other side. Page has some age toning as is expected with a minor faint staining toward the top of the page. Unless trimmed by later owners the leaf measures 18 1/2" by 12" approximately. The frame measures 23 1/4" by 18"
