Utamaro Meiji Block Print (late 1800s-early 1900s). This block print was originally created circa 1800 by Kitagawa Utamaro. This woodblock print does look in about every way like a Utamaro original. Given the collection it is from and the hand writing on the board its attached to it was looked at by S. M. Shiba who determined it was a Meiji period recreation of one of Utamaro’s famous works. Kitagawa Utamaro (circa1753-1806) was one of Japan’s most celebrated ukiyo-e woodblock print artists, renowned for his portraits of beautiful women (bijinga) and nature studies. His work defined late 18th century Edo art and influenced both Japanese and Western aesthetics. From the Chuck and Eileen Hoffman Collection who spent time in Japan as overseas school teachers. It measures 15" by 9 3/16" approximately.
