Navajo Yei Style Hand Woven Rug made in Mexico circa 1970's
Navajo Yei Style Hand Woven Rug made in Mexico circa 1970’s. From 1910 to the 1930’s Navajo Rugs were in very high demand. As a result as with most collectibles reproductions started popping up in the 1940’s because of the demand for the beautiful rugs that the Navajo made. Very close in appearance hand made fascimiles tourists for the most part never knew they were buying rugs that were not Navajo. The main give away is in the thread used on the outside boarders. The ones made in Mexico have multiple strands which can be seen by separating the weaving as shown in the photo. This rug is most likely from the 1970’s. Most likely still made by Native American Indians who lived in Mexico…just not Navajo. Nicely made and in excellent condition this rug measures 19 5/8" by 40 1/4" approximately.
