Lot 60:
Nicely Developed Miniature ("Toy") 3/4 Groove Axe found in Monroe County, Missouri
Nicely Developed Miniature ("Toy") 3/4 Groove Axe found in Monroe County, Missouri by Wesley Nickell. Exhibits correct manufacture and excellent patination. 3/4 Groove Axes this size are quite rare. Miniature stone axes, typically 2 to 4 inches long, mimicked the form of full size axes but were much smaller and lighter. Archaeologists propose several possible functions: toys for children, ceremonial objects, amulets, or practice pieces demonstrating skilled stone working. A few miniature axes do show ancient use-wear, hinting at delicate utility purposes, but general evidence supports the view that they were largely symbolic or playful rather than practical woodworking tools.
