Lot 103:
Pre-Columbian - Veracruz Effigy Vessel, Classic Period, ca. 300–900 AD
A hand-modeled Pre-Columbian effigy vessel from the Classic-period Veracruz (Gulf Coast) tradition, dating to approximately 300-900 AD. The figure is depicted in a reclining posture with hands resting on the abdomen, featuring the expressive facial style characteristic of Gulf Coast ceramic artistry. The vessel opening is integrated into the top of the head, a functional design element commonly associated with ritual or incense-related use.
The face displays large circular eyes, a prominent nose, and an open mouth vent, all modeled with the rounded, sculptural forms typical of Veracruz effigy work. The surface shows mottled firing clouds and mineral deposits consistent with ancient low-temperature firing and long burial. The underside exhibits a natural stress fracture running several inches across the base; the edges are softened and mineralized, indicating an ancient firing or burial-related crack rather than modern damage.
