6 1/4" Pre-Columbian Tripod Pot with Incising, 500 BCE–1200 CE
Pre-Columbian tripod ceramic vessel measuring approximately 6 1/4 inches tall and 5 inches in diameter. The vessel stands on three hollow conical legs containing clay pellets or stones, producing a distinct rattle when shaken, an intentional feature associated with ceremonial or ritual use.
The body is decorated with continuous incised designs arranged in two fields, each bounded by raised nodes that divide the vessel into symmetrical halves. Within these fields, the artist carved flowing, angular, and stepped lines that form a structured symbolic motif rather than simple geometric banding. The composition suggests an abstracted, mask like or anthropomorphic presence rendered through the Pre-Columbian visual language of interlocking geometric strokes. Traces of red pigment remain within the incisions, indicating the design was originally highlighted for visibility in ritual settings.
Condition:
Rim deterioration and stress fractures in the base and rim consistent with age. No visible restoration. Legs remain intact and the rattle function is preserved.
