Hopewell Notched Shell Pendant / Charm, Fulton Co. IL (Asher Estate)
Hopewell shell pendant or charm measuring approximately 1 1/4 inches, recovered in Fulton County, Illinois, from the late Chuck Asher estate. Crafted from a section of freshwater shell, the piece features two intentional edge notches—an established hallmark of Hopewell shell working used for suspension, lashing, or symbolic marking. The overall form is irregular but clearly modified, with smoothed edges and light shaping consistent with small personal ornaments of the Hopewell Interaction Sphere.
The surface shows natural age related wear, including minor pitting and softened detail typical of long term ground deposition in the Illinois River Valley. No modern tool marks, repairs, or restorations are visible. The piece remains stable and well preserved, retaining the characteristic chalky surface texture and subtle shaping expected of authentic Hopewell ornamental shell work.
This artifact is an unquestionably authentic Hopewell shell pendant, exhibiting all diagnostic traits of the type, including intentional edge notching, deliberate shaping, and proper ancient patination.
