Buyer's premium:

This 3 1/2 inch Etley knife was found in Monroe County, Missouri by Brian Evans and represents a classic example of the Late Archaic knife tradition of the central Mississippi River Valley. Estimated at approximately 3500 to 2500 years BP, it fits firmly within the Late Archaic period with continued use into the Early Woodland horizon. Crafted from a light high quality Missouri chert, the surface shows well developed natural patination, mineral sheen in recessed flake scars, subtle smoothing on high points, and no modern breaks or fresh edges. The color and texture are consistent with long term burial in regional soils.

This Etley exhibits bold confident workmanship typical of the type, including large broad percussion flakes struck from alternating sides, a strong well supported medial ridge, a thick sturdy midsection, pressure retouched edges for final sharpening, and a reinforced durable tip. The flake pattern reflects classic Late Archaic Missouri craftsmanship.

The knife shows an elongated symmetrical blade, a sturdy lenticular cross section, a slightly expanding lower blade transitioning into a short stem, and a flat to subtly concave base. These features align closely with documented Etley knives from central Missouri.

Condition is excellent for a field found artifact. The tip is intact with minor ancient use wear, the edges show authentic prehistoric retouch, and the base is complete and original. There is no modern resharpening, restoration, or damage, and the piece retains its natural archaeological surface with no evidence of heat treatment.

Recovered in Monroe County, Missouri, an area well known for Etley production and Late Archaic lithic traditions, this example carries solid provenance through named finder Brian Evans.

Based on its form, workmanship, patination, and documented provenance, this is a high quality unquestionably authentic Etley knife and a desirable example of the type.
