Exceptional Artifact & Collectible Auction
Lot 259:
98g Ruby/Pink Sapphire Corundum Rough – Jeweler’s Estate – Color Window
98 gram group of select natural ruby and pink sapphire corundum rough from the personal cutting box of a deceased jeweler and gem cutter. These stones were separated from a larger parcel and kept aside, indicating they were chosen for their color, translucency, or cutting potential. The lot includes a range of pink to reddish pink tones, with several pieces showing good internal glow when backlit.
One stone has a cut window revealing strong pink internal color, confirming the material’s quality and suitability for cabbing or faceting. All tested pieces scratch glass easily, consistent with corundum’s hardness of 9. The rough shows a mix of natural shapes including blocky crystals, rounded water worn forms, and metamorphic shaped pieces typical of ruby bearing deposits.
Some stones display natural silvery green or layered cortex, a common surface feature in ruby rough from primary and secondary deposits. The group offers a useful range of sizes and shapes for lapidary work, with larger pieces measuring approximately 1 inch long and varying in thickness.
