Lot 279:
Green River Formation Fossil Fish Plate – Two Knightia + Back Fossil – Wyoming
Fossil fish plate from the Green River Formation, Kemmerer, Wyoming, dating to the Eocene epoch (approximately 50 million years old). The front of the slab contains two well preserved Knightia fish fossils measuring approximately 5 1/4 and 5 inches in length. Both show clear skeletal detail, fin structure, and natural coloration typical of Fossil Lake deposits.
The reverse side of the slab contains an additional Knightia fossil that was not exposed by the original preparer. This unprepared specimen is a desirable feature indicating the plate is natural and unaltered, with original fossil material present on both sides.
Knightia is the state fossil of Wyoming and one of the most iconic species from the Green River Formation. Multi specimen plates of this size and preservation are highly collectible and display beautifully.
