3/4" Rhaphidiophorus Hystrix Fossil from the Mazon Creek Site in Illinois
The Rhaphidiophorus hystrix fossil is a rare polychaete wormfrom the Mazon Creek fossil beds near Essex Illinois. Thesefossils date to the Middle Pennsylvanian Period about300 million years ago.
The fossil itself measures a little over 1 in.The stone nodule it is seated in measures about 3 4 in.Both halves of the nodule are present and hold the fossil.
Ex Field Museum of Natural History Chicago.HA stands for the Hoard Anderson collection one of the largestprivate collections of Mazon Creek fossils donated to themuseum. Hoard donated his collection in 1978. The museum laterdeaccessioned much of the collection to raise funds for museumprojects.
