Exceptional Artifact & Collectible Auction
Lot 497:
19th to Early 20th Century Egyptian Style Painted Miniature Vessel, “Poison Bottle
Hand formed and hand painted ceramic miniature vessel decorated with dark floral and concentric circle motifs on a light slip ground
The rounded body short neck and central perforation reflect the style of Egyptian revival and Mediterranean inspired pottery produced in the late 19th to early 20th century and earlier traditional workshops
Surface wear paint loss and a small firing crack on the base are consistent with age and handmade production
A note accompanying the piece identified it as an Ancient Egyptian poisons bottle a term commonly used by early collectors for small enigmatic vessels of this type
While not an archaeological artifact it remains a distinctive example of Egyptian style or ethnographic style pottery with genuine age
