Lot 584:
Hand Carved Archaic Style Chinese Stone Serpent Pendant, Late Qing to Republic Period
Hand carved stone pendant in the form of a stylized serpent executed in an archaic Chinese folk art tradition. The piece features a curling body incised line details and a biconical suspension hole created using traditional abrasive drilling methods. This type of carving reflects motifs associated with protection transformation and ancient zoomorphic symbolism found throughout Chinese decorative culture.
The workmanship tool traces and patination are consistent with late Qing to Republic period workshop production. Surface wear from age and handling gives the pendant an appealing time softened character.
A distinctive example of traditional Chinese stone carving with strong sculptural presence.
