Lot 586:
Hand Carved Archaic Style Chinese Stone Turtle Pendant, Late Qing to Republic Period
Hand carved stone pendant depicting a stylized turtle executed in an archaic Chinese folk art tradition. The form features a rounded shell simplified head and incised line details with a biconical suspension hole created using traditional abrasive drilling methods. Turtles are long standing symbols of longevity stability and protection in Chinese culture and this carving reflects those enduring motifs while showing the expressive workmanship typical of late Qing to Republic period rural workshops.
Natural surface wear and patination from age and handling give the piece a warm time softened character.
A distinctive example of traditional Chinese stone carving with appealing symbolic presence.
