Buyer's premium:

This 3 7/8 inch Early Archaic Agate Basin displays the classic long narrow blade form associated with the type. The workmanship is strong with long controlled percussion thinning flakes running up both faces and well refined edges that reflect the skill of an experienced Early Archaic knapper. The overall outline is symmetrical and well balanced aligning closely with documented Agate Basin examples from the central Midwest.

Crafted from Burlington chert the point shows excellent ancient patination giving the surface a rich well aged appearance while still preserving the integrity of the original flake scars. The blade edges show genuine prehistoric retouch and the tip and base remain complete and original. Its size workmanship and preservation make it a desirable Illinois Agate Basin.

This artifact was found in Logan County Illinois and later entered the respected collections of Dean Downing and Brian Wrage both known for their high quality Midwestern material.

This artifact is an authentic Early Archaic Agate Basin exhibiting all diagnostic traits of the type including its long narrow blade controlled bifacial thinning and properly shaped hafting area. The Burlington chert shows genuine ancient patination with naturally softened flake scars and no evidence of modern reworking or enhancement.
