Buyer's premium:

This bannerstone measures approximately 5 15/16 inches and represents a large and impressive example of the type. The form is classic for an Archaic bannerstone, with a well shaped body and strong overall symmetry despite the noted damage. The piece shows excellent ancient patination, giving it the rich well aged surface expected of an old North Central U.S. find. At some point in its collecting history the bannerstone was lightly waxed to enhance its appearance, a common practice among earlier collectors. The underlying surface remains original and the patination is consistent across the piece. Even with the damage, the workmanship and size make it a desirable example for collectors of early bannerstones. This artifact comes from the Dean Downing Collection, a respected source for quality Midwestern material, and later entered the Brian Wrage Collection, adding another layer of solid provenance. Based on its form, workmanship, patination, and long established provenance, this is a strong and unquestionably authentic Archaic bannerstone.Provenance: Ex: Dean Downing Collection; Ex: Brian Wrage Collection.
