Lot 137:
Pre-Columbian Pottery Effigy Pendant
Hand-modeled hollow pottery effigy pendant of elongated bulbous form, pierced near the apex for suspension. One side displays a longitudinal slit opening extending into the hollow interior, while the body is decorated with a painted geometric band composed of alternating black squares and dotted-square motifs on a buff ground. The surface exhibits substantial age-related wear, smoothing, and accumulated patination, with areas of surviving pigment throughout. The abstract sculptural form may represent an anthropomorphic or fertility-related effigy. Intact with expected ancient wear and minor losses to painted decoration. Measures 4 5/8" tall approximately. Ex Randy Hudson Collection. Possibly originating from the Lower Central American region, including present-day Costa Rica or Nicaragua.
