Buyer's premium:

A compact, tapered Ohio Valley siltstone pipe, shaped from a mottled grey, fine-grained stone typical of the Pennsylvanian formations widely used by Woodland groups across Ohio. The piece measures 3¼ inches in length, narrowing to a 3/8-inch smoked stem end and flaring to a 1 1/16-inch bowl end. The bowl cavity is a well-executed Native-drilled 7/8-inch bore, consistent with Ohio Woodland pipe manufacture. The stone itself shows the classic traits of Ohio siltstone: mottled grey coloration, medium hardness, and the ability to take a smooth, ancient hand polish. A small, naturally occurring curved micro-channel (<1/8 inch, approx. 1? inches long) runs within the body of the stone – a typical trace-burrow feature found in Ohio siltstone, formed long before the pipe was made. This natural void does not intersect the bowl bore and confirms the stone was selected and worked around its original geological structure. One side shows an old break that has been handled and worn smooth over time, indicating long-term use or retention after damage. The overall form, drilling style, stone type, and wear pattern are all consistent with authentic Ohio Valley pipe manufacture. A piece of the rim has been glued back in place.
