Buyer's premium:

A finely made 4-inch woodworking celt crafted from charcoal-grey metasiltstone, recovered in Giles County, Virginia. The tool has a flat back and a narrow 1¼-inch width, a classic form used for shaving and smoothing wood in the Blue Ridge and Valley & Ridge Woodland traditions. The stone shows the expected faint natural banding of regional metasiltstone and carries a soft matte sheen from age and handling. The material is tougher than slate and was commonly selected for celts in this part of Virginia due to its durability and ability to take a clean working edge. Overall manufacture, stone type, and patination are fully consistent with authentic prehistoric woodworking tools from Giles County. Ex James Shield Collection
