Lot 210:
Cache of 15 Hopewell Bifaces found in Western Illinois
Cache of 15 Hopewell Bifaces found in western Illinois. Reported from west-central Illinois, a region naturally poor in high-quality chert. These large bifaces are made from Coshocton (Upper Mercer) chert originating in east-central Ohio. The Hopewell interaction sphere maintained extensive trade networks that followed the major river systems, allowing premium Ohio flints to travel far into Illinois. To groups living in a rock-poor region, bifaces of this size and quality would have been extremely valuable. The cache includes pieces measuring approximately 3¼? to 6? in length. Ex James Shields Collection.
