Lot 215:
6 1/4" Pre-Columbian Tripod Pottery Vessel
6 1/4" Pre-Columbian Tripod Pottery Vessel – Ex Tom Moxley Collection
A Pre-Columbian terracotta tripod vessel of rounded form raised on three integral conical supports. The exterior is decorated with incised geometric ornament consisting of encircling bands and a continuous register of rectangular panel motifs beneath the rim. The vessel measures approximately 6 1/4 inches in height and 6 1/4 inches in diameter and displays an attractive red-orange earthenware surface with areas of mineral accretion and archaeological patina.
Hand-formed from terracotta, the vessel features a thickened rim above a globular body supported by three sturdy legs. The incised decorative program remains visible around the circumference, providing visual interest and reflecting traditional Pre-Columbian ceramic craftsmanship. The tripod form is characteristic of ancient pottery traditions throughout parts of Mesoamerica and Central America.
The earthenware body exhibits surface deposits, age-related wear, and accumulated patination consistent with antiquity. Visible old repairs, crack lines, and areas of restoration are present. The vessel remains largely complete and retains strong display appeal. In its current state, the piece presents an excellent candidate for professional conservation or restoration by the next owner.
The combination of tripod construction, incised decoration, archaeological surface character, and substantial completeness makes this an appealing example for collectors of Pre-Columbian pottery and ancient art.
