Lot 95:
Mid-Century Tlingit Carved Wood Long Nose Spirit Mask
Mid-Century Tlingit Carved Wood Long Nose Spirit Mask From The Chuck & Eileen Hoffman Collection
Hand-carved mid-century Tlingit Northwest Coast Native American wooden spirit mask featuring an exceptionally elongated nose, deeply incised arched brows, narrow eye slits, prominent carved nostrils, and a broad expressive mouth. The mask is carved from a single piece of wood with substantial hollowing to the reverse, allowing it to be worn. Side attachment holes and cord remain present. The sculptural nose projects prominently from the face and serves as the dominant visual element of the carving, creating a powerful ceremonial character associated with Tlingit and Northwest Coast Indigenous mask traditions of Southeast Alaska.
The reverse displays hand-carved tool marks and excavation consistent with traditional carved mask construction. Surface patina, oxidation, and handling wear are present throughout, with age-related wear and minor losses visible. The carving exhibits strong three-dimensional modeling and retains an appealing untouched surface. Large carved nostrils penetrate the nose and are visible from the reverse, further demonstrating the depth and complexity of the carving and the skill of the maker.
A desirable mid-20th century example of Northwest Coast Native American art, tribal art, ethnographic art, and Indigenous carving. The mask displays the bold sculptural features and expressive character for which Tlingit ceremonial masks are highly regarded by collectors of Native American artifacts, First Nations material, Alaska Native art, Northwest Coast artifacts, wooden masks, and traditional tribal carvings.
