Signed Wherritt 1967 Inuit Figure Carved Wood Sculpture - Ex Eldon Jones Collection
Signed Wherritt 1967 Inuit Figure Carved Wood Sculpture From The Late Eldon Jones Collection
Standing approximately 8.9 inches tall, this hand carved wood sculpture depicts a hooded Inuit figure rendered in a highly stylized mid-century modern form. The artist employed sweeping contours and carefully simplified features to capture the essential silhouette of the subject, emphasizing the parka-like hood, flowing garment form, and expressive raised arm. The carving demonstrates thoughtful design and skilled execution, conveying movement and character through shape rather than excessive detail.
The sculpture is carved from a single piece of wood with a warm natural finish and visible hand-worked surfaces. The abstracted treatment remains recognizable as an Arctic figure while reflecting the modernist sculptural trends of the 1960s. The underside is carved with the signature "WHERRITT" and dated 1967, with the original felt pad remaining in place.
Surface shows expected age-related wear consistent with display and handling. The carving presents well with attractive color and patina throughout. A distinctive and uncommon signed work likely reflecting the artist’s interest in Arctic or Inuit subject matter.
Provenance: From the late Eldon Jones Collection.
Condition: Ancient Authentic
