Highly Detailed Chokwe Mask from the Congo, Africa - Mid to Late Century
Highly Detailed Chokwe Mask from the Congo, Africa. Extremely ornate for a Chokwe mask. Mid or more likely Late Century. Likely influenced by other tribes like the Dogon that have incorporated metal in to their masks for centuries. A traditional mask for the Chokwe in its basic form covered by brass or bronze engraved plate which covers the face. Beadwork has been used by the Chokwe for centuries and this mask is a nice example of their artistic expression incorporating beads in to a mask. This may be an older mask that has been improved upon over time. The inside surface of the mask has considerable wear polish from use over time. As shown in photos it is in very nice condition and is one of the more ornately detailed in all aspects mask we have had. It measures approximately 21" tall and 17" wide.
