Lot 587:
Hand Carved Archaic Style Chinese Stone Guardian Mask Pendant, Late Qing to Republic Period
Hand carved stone pendant depicting a fierce guardian mask executed in an archaic Chinese folk art tradition. The stylized features including the prominent brow wide eyes and expressive mouth reflect motifs associated with protective spirit imagery found in traditional Chinese decorative arts. A biconical suspension hole created using traditional abrasive drilling methods supports a late Qing to Republic period workshop origin.
The surface shows natural wear and patination consistent with age and handling giving the piece a strong time softened presence.
A distinctive example of Chinese folk carving embodying the protective symbolism of guardian masks.
Measures 2 1/8 in.
