Lot 596:
Likely Aboriginal Australian Carved Wooden Snake Toy — Burned Motifs, Mid 20th Century, 10¼
A small hand carved wooden stick in the form of a stylized snake decorated with burned geometric motifs. This piece is likely of Aboriginal Australian origin consistent with mid 20th century craft traditions in which small carved toys play sticks and souvenir items were produced for local use and for sale in regional markets. The snake form and pyrographic decoration align with the simplified folk craft aesthetic commonly seen in Aboriginal made tourist items from the 1950s to the 1980s.
The stick measures approximately 10 1/4 inches long and features repeating circular and linear burned patterns along the body giving it a rustic handmade character. Carved from a single piece of wood it reflects the informal carving and burning techniques typical of mid century Australian craftwork. A charming example of small Aboriginal influenced folk carving.
