Lot 105:
2" Ground Stone Disc - Ex James Shield Collection
A well-worked ground stone disc fashioned from a dense dark gray fine-grained stone and recovered from Smith County, Virginia. The artifact measures approximately 2 inches in diameter and exhibits a thick circular form with flat faces and a smoothly rounded perimeter. Unlike the more lenticular profile commonly associated with classic discoidals, this example displays a simple disc-shaped configuration with evenly ground surfaces and substantial thickness.
The stone possesses a dark gray to olive-gray coloration with subtle mineral variation visible throughout the surface. Extensive grinding and smoothing have produced a uniform finish, and the perimeter has been carefully rounded to create a balanced circular form. The broad faces remain notably flat, distinguishing the piece from the more convex profile commonly encountered on many discoidals.
The material displays a fine, tightly compacted texture that has weathered to a soft, even patina. Minor natural variations within the stone are present, but no significant inclusions, fractures, or structural weaknesses are evident. The consistent finish suggests deliberate shaping and prolonged use or handling prior to deposition.
Condition is very good overall, with minor surface abrasions, scattered handling marks, and slight edge irregularities consistent with age. The disc remains intact and retains its original form, with no evidence of modern repair or restoration.
The material, workmanship, surface wear, and overall morphology are consistent with an authentic prehistoric ground stone disc from the Eastern Woodlands. While simpler in form than many perforated or highly refined discoidals, the artifact represents a recognizable class of worked stone object associated with indigenous gaming, ceremonial, or utilitarian activities throughout the eastern United States.
No repairs or restoration are evident.
