Lot 106:
1 7/8" Grooved Quartzite Weight - Virginia - Ex James Shield Collection
An oval grooved stone weight fashioned from a naturally water-worn quartzite cobble and reportedly recovered in Virginia. The artifact measures approximately 1? inches in length and exhibits a compact oval form with smoothly rounded surfaces and a shallow circumferential groove positioned near the midpoint. The maker appears to have selected a naturally suitable cobble, requiring little alteration beyond the addition of the groove itself.
The stone is composed of dense quartzite displaying attractive reddish-brown coloration with scattered lighter mineral grains visible throughout the surface. The material retains the hard, compact character typical of quartzite and exhibits a naturally developed polish consistent with long-term waterworn exposure prior to modification. The groove blends smoothly into the surrounding surface and follows the stone’s natural contours, creating a balanced and functional form.
Close examination reveals subtle evidence of pecking associated with the groove, indicating deliberate modification of the original cobble. The groove itself retains the same aged surface character and patination as the remainder of the stone, suggesting considerable age and long-term weathering following manufacture. The overall shape appears largely natural, with prehistoric workmanship focused primarily on creating the groove rather than extensively reshaping the stone.
Condition is very good overall, with minor surface irregularities, scattered contact marks, and natural mineral inclusions typical of quartzite. The groove remains clearly defined, and no modern damage, repairs, or restoration are evident.
The material, weathering, workmanship, and groove morphology are consistent with an authentic prehistoric grooved stone weight. Examples of this type are frequently encountered as utilitarian objects throughout the Eastern Woodlands, where naturally shaped cobbles were selected and minimally modified to create functional weighted implements.
No repairs or restoration are evident.
