Buyer's premium:

A compact clay trade pipe of classic elbow form, fashioned from reddish-brown fired clay and exhibiting the simple utilitarian design associated with historic-period smoking pipes. The pipe measures approximately 1¾ inches in overall length and features a slightly flaring bowl, short stem, and smoothly rounded bowl-to-stem junction. Its modest size and well-balanced proportions make it a representative example of a widely used historic pipe form.

The clay body displays attractive reddish-brown coloration with areas of darker gray and olive-toned mineral staining developed through age and burial. The exterior surface retains a smooth, well-developed patina, while minor losses and wear spots reveal lighter clay beneath the surface. The overall finish reflects long-term handling and environmental exposure rather than recent manufacture.

The bowl exhibits a slightly out-of-round rim with age-consistent wear along the lip, while the stem opening remains intact and well preserved. Subtle irregularities in the form and finish are consistent with hand-finished clay pipe manufacture. The interior of the bowl shows evidence of use and retains a naturally aged appearance.

Condition is very good overall, with scattered surface abrasions, minor edge wear, and small losses consistent with age. The bowl and stem remain intact, and the pipe retains its original form without significant structural damage.

The form, clay composition, surface patina, and wear patterns are all consistent with an authentic historic-period trade pipe. Examples of this type were widely utilized throughout North America and remain popular artifacts of the early contact and frontier periods.

No repairs or restoration are evident.
