2 1/8" Finely Flaked Jasper or Agate Neolithic Bi found in Liaoning Province, China
2 1/8" Finely Flaked Jasper or Agate Neolithic Bi or Ornament found in Liaoning Province, China. This is an outstanding example showing some of the methods used in the manufacture of ancient bi’s. Many stones would require string cutting (an ancient method used in china on jade and other very hard stones and peck and grinding as well as carving with stone. Some stones if chippable could have flakes removed greatly decreasing the amount of time it would take to make one. This bi shows off the outstanding craftsmanship the ancient artist made it from by flaking it to make its initial form. The level of his workmanship would rival that of the better mayan eccentric makers in Central American who also liked to make eccentric rings. He likely had intention on grinding it down and polishing it but didnt get that far. Impressive artifact with excellent manufacture and patination.
