Sri Lanka Dance Ritual Mask
A fascinating piece of traditional art used in various cultural performances and rituals in Sri Lanka. Typically carved from the Kaduru tree timber, which is seasoned and colored to ensure durability. Used in traditional dance rituals, such as the Sanni Yakuma which are exorcism ceremonies aimed at healing people from physical and psychological ailments caused by evil spirits. The masks are worn by dancers who perform energetic and dramatic dances to drive away the demons. Each mask represents a specific demon or spirit and is linked to a particular folktale or myth. The masks are believed to have the power to invoke and banish thee spirits, bringing healing and protection to the community. 10 1/2" Tall and 5 3/4" Wide.
