16th Century Cusco Painting "Early Europeans Hunting in Peru" on Hemp Canvas
16th Century Cusco Painting "Early Europeans Hunting in Peru". Signed by the artist W. Florez R.. The writing on the bottom of the painting reads " The Hunters represent a custom of our people and the blind man sitting under the tree with his hat attracts the birds that fly over it with his hat full of corn while the hunters are shooting". Roughly translated by us. Could be off on a word or two. The Cusco School of Art was an artistic tradition that developed in Cusco, Peru, during the colonial period, from the 16th to the 18th centuries. This school of art combined European techniques with indigenous Andean traditions, resulting in unique and vibrant religious paintings. Ex Chuck and Eileen Hoffman Collection. Chuck and Eileen were schoolteachers in Lima Peru in the 1980’s. This is one of the many treasures they came home with to remind them of the people and culture they were a part of at that time in their lives. Most paintings from the period were Religious in nature. This is a rare piece that gives us a glimpse into the dress, wildlife of the region and weaponry worn by the Spanish in the period. Painted on a stretched hemp canvas the painting is in very good condition for its age. It does have the cracking on the surface that is expected for a painting of its age. There are 2 very small spots where paint has chipped off that are shown in photos and other blemishes where it meets the frame along the edges as shown in the photos (We tried to catch all faults). Primitively framed it is as it was obtained in the 1980’s. Painted during the Spanish Golden Age in Peru. This painting measures 13 7/8" by 11 5/8". Frame measures 16" by 13 1/2" approximately. This is the real deal folks….don’t hold back! The consigner of this lot asked us to list it again and lowered his reserve to a very reasonable price.
