Original 1865 Kunichika Japanese Woodblock Print of Ichimura Uzaemon III in the Role of Tsumagasa Soyojiro – Edo Period. Ichimura Uzaemon III was a significant figure in the world of kabuki theatre during the Edo period in Japan. He became the official managerof the Ichimura-za theatre in 1652, following the death of Murata Kuroemon. Uzaemon III played a crucial role in the theatre’s development and success, overseeing numerous premieres and significant historical events in kabuki. The artist of this print Toyohara Kunichika (1835-1900) was a prominent Japanese woodblock print artist during the late Edo and early Meiji periods. He was known for his kabuki actor portraits and his ability to capture the emotional depth of his subjects. Kunichika was a student of Utagawa Kunisada I (Toyokuni III) and later became a master in his own right. This woodblock print measures 14 1/8" by 9 1/2". Still very frame worthy with nice color for its age this print does have some tiny holes in the corners where it was likely tacked to a board at one time.
