Buyer's premium:

Mid Century or Older Guro Mask from the Ivory Coast, Africa. Human masks of the Guro are characterized by a long face, prominent forehead and an elongated nose. This one has an elaborate three prong hair doo and sacrification marks on the face. It was used by the Secret Society of the Guru Tribe. A religious/spiritual artifact of sorts it was importance in ceremonial use and was never kept at home. It was hidden away until it was needed for ceremonies and intiations. This is an outstanding example of this mask type. Highly decorated and hand carved from one chunk of wood. It has some patination from time and the elements w/ the top of the hairdo having been glued from the splitting of wood. Minor faults to paint and a small piece of wood missing inside the chin beard that isnt noticeable from the front. A very nice piece of african tribal wear which would display well. It measures 23" tall, 7 1/2" wide and 5 1/2" deep approximately. From the lifetime collection of Chuck and Eileen Hoffman.
