A well crafted modern stone spud carved in Pike County Illinois during the 1970s. Made from a dense reddish brown stone with a polished surface this example reflects the regional carving traditions practiced by a small circle of Midwestern makers active during the mid 20th century. The form shows clean shaping smooth tapering and a well finished bit typical of the areas hobbyist and folk carvers.
This piece is consistent with the work produced by the Pike County carving community including makers associated with the Guthrie Lemons circle as well as other local craftsmen who carved spuds pipes and effigy forms during the period. While the exact maker is not documented the material finish and workmanship align closely with this regional tradition.
Condition. The piece has an old break near the base that has been glued as shown in the photos. Light handling wear overall. No additional cracks or repairs observed.
Provenance. From a Midwestern collection.
