Native American Artifacts & Collectibles
Lot 100:
3 3/4" Finely Made Clovis (minor rechip to tip)
3 3/4" Finely Made Clovis (minor rechip to tip). Found in the Midwest. The material is either Flint Ridge Chalcedony or a High Grade of Burlington chert. Up near the tip there are fresher flakes going about 1/2" down on one side from either mishandling or by alteration (rechipping in modern times). Ancient Clovis of this quality are extremely rare. Ex James Shield Collection. My thoughts on this piece are that it is Flint Ridge and most likely found in Ohio. The difference between the off white flint ridge and high grade Burlington when patinated is quite similar. Since James had artifacts from other parts of the country it becomes difficult to make firm determinations on some pieces origins without their provenance written on them.
