Lot 101:
4 1/8 Inch Late Woodland Stone Gorget - Ex Valentine Bros And James Shield Collections
This is a Late Woodland Period stone gorget measuring approximately 4 1/8 inches long, found in southwest Virginia. The piece is made from a fine-grained siltstone or argillite and shows intentional shaping with a flat, ground body and smoothed edges. It has two drilled suspension holes, both made from one side and not biconical. The uniconical drilling, simple two-hole layout, flat plate form, and fine-grained stone material are all characteristic of Woodland gorgets from the Appalachian region rather than Mississippian stone forms, which typically show biconical drilling, harder metamorphic materials, and engraved or more formalized shapes. The surfaces display age-consistent wear and natural patination. This gorget comes from the Valentine Bros Collection and the James Shield Collection. There is a fracture on one end which can be seen in photos. We don’t think it is glued but it could be.
